Cantine
Povero - Capitano
del Palio Monferrato Dolcetto
Grandpa
Tumlin planted the first vineyard in 1948, continuing the traditions of his
ancestors, whose roots date back to 1837. Since then, Cantine Povero has
maintained a constant commitment to responsible viticulture, working in concert
with the seasons and inherent strengths of their lands.
More
than 150,000 vines in 50 hectares of vineyards sit in full sunlight from dawn
until dusk around 322 meters of altitude. Relying on natural, environmentally
friendly technologies, all grapes coming from the Povero vineyards are
certified organic.
Cantine
Povero believes that their wines are “bottled experiences,” meant as a gift to
the world.
Tasting Notes
Light,
bright, and red fruit driven. Lots of freshness and varietally correct.
Cultivation
Espalier
cultivation, guyot pruning. The yield per hectare is 9,000 kg. Manually
harvested.
Vinification
Fermented
in stainless steel, temperature-controlled tanks at 28-30° C over 6-8 days,
malolactic fermentation at 20° C.
Ruby red
in colour, delicate & fruity on the palate with red berries, cherry &
violet notes. A velvety mouthfeel, slightly tannic & pleasantly dry.
And it
has a 91-point score on CellarTracker, which also describes it accurately and
well:
Light red
hue that opens with red and black fruit aromas. Black cherry and licorice with
slight almond notes on a medium length finish. A fabulous example of how lovely
an everyday table wine can be.
Dolcetto
is often described as Italy’s answer to Beaujolais, but I find the best
Dolcettos, like this, far more flavorful and satisfying than any Beaujolais at
their price point.
